No Two Communities are the Same
When it comes to creating online learning communities, it's pretty neat to see that no two groups work the same. This goes for both how users communicate as well as the tools and social media sites they are on.
I've seen many communities work on Facebook while also trying to grow on other sites like Reddit but have little success. And of course, there are many cases of the opposite being true. The trend seems to be that the ideal audience tends to somehow find the community, and they usually gravitate to one tool. Once that tool is the norm, it's pretty hard to have a decent amount of the learners move to other sites or even just use those sites periodically. Once the audience is established, everyone seems comfortable with the established parameters.
I recently wrote a out Discord for a paper and how it's a very unique communication tool. I plan on trying to use it to build a community for my podcast, Farm Traveler. The ability to create different channels on our Discord server for certain topics and have ongoing text and voice channels would be great tools for our online community!
