THE BEST CLASS

 Web 2.0 is done and I have to say this has been the best class I have taken this far at FSU ISLT.  The design of the course, the activities, and the involvement with the professor, have all been second to none.  Had a blast and learned a ton about technology that's been brought to us thanks to Web 2.0!  I was recommended this class by a past student and am so glad I took this when I did!

The Ice Bucket Challange

When doing research for this week on activism seen on social media, my first thought went towards things like protesting and fighting for rights.  But, a quick Google search reminded me of a famous movement from a few years ago that is a great example of activism that was started thanks to social media. A few years ago, we all saw viral videos of celebrities, athletes, and our friends and family pouring ice water on them all in the name of fighting ALS.  The disease targets the nervous system and causes irreversible muscle failure.  There still is no cure and no real consensus on what causes it.  In 2014, the Ice Bucket Challenge was started and spread across every social media site as people would challenge their friends to pour ice water on themselves to bring awareness to ALS and help raise money for more research.  The challenge was able to raise over $115 million for ALS research.  This fun challenge united a huge amount of people and brought awareness...

Can learning communities get too big?

Yes.  I think learning communities can get too big.   I've joined several communities and networks around podcasting as I've tried to grow my show to help it reach a larger audience.  And while some networks do start out great, too often when they reach a critical mass, it turns more into the same few questions getting asked over and over.  There is still good debate and collaboration, but it seems not as much as we wished it to be. After some frustrations, another podcaster and I started our own Master Mind group for podcasters geared towards agriculture.  Now the four of us did sort of know each other first, but none of us have met just yet.   Each month, we make it a point to listen to each other episodes, write down some feedback, take feedback, and discuss other key items like social media use, monetizing, etc.  It's turned into a great little community that has genuinely helped out each of our shows.  We are just honest and open ab...

Why does Wikipedia get a bad wrap?

 In high school, all those moons ago, I remember every teacher saying something like, "And don't use Wikipedia as a source for your paper.  You can't trust anything on there." Now, that was around 2009, so maybe it was warranted once Wiki became a pretty popular site.  Now, in 2022, I'd say most people generally trust the content on Wikipedia.   Wikipedia acts as a sort of open-source database on anything and everything.  Over the years, the site now has a large volunteer base that keeps track of changes and updated content created by general users that make any sort of change.  I really do understand the stress that was had over not trusting something that literally anyone on the planet can edit.  But now, since Wiki is popular worldwide and tracks and edits the changes, I think the fear of this tool should be a thing of the past.
